Regulatory patterns within the ever-growing set of regional trade agreements (RTAs) emerge from a continuous cycle of inspiration, paraphrasing, or copy-pasting of provisions from previous treaties. The sheer number and length of RTAs makes it difficult to trace the origin of a given provision, and this is where automated text mining comes to the rescue. In this article we validate the assumptions and then develop automatic tools which make it possible to determine who creates the rules and who copies them. To this end, we split the articles into various units, from short sequences of characters to long sequences of words, and check the similarity of articles using multiple methods of assessing similarity, from simple Jaccard similarity to document embeddings. The results of automatic similarity detection are then compared to a number of expert-created challenges, to discover which method matches the ground truth best. Even though dimensionality reduction outperforms simpler bag-of-words methods in assessing pairwise similarity between articles, it is often mistaken in finding the ultimate source for the article. Jaccard similarity with a low threshold is sufficient to solve the tricky cases. Sequences of words – which increase the importance of minor changes and modifications – fail to improve the results: analysis of single words or sequences of characters is more effective. Even under conservative assumptions, about half of articles in RTAs are copied from another RTA. Our research lends empirical corroboration to quantitative assessment of the rule-making power of actors within the international economic law.

The purpose of the paper is to analyze articles from ten leading technology-focused media to distinguish key narratives of technological development. It argues that the media put forward ethical and political agendas. Another aim of the article is to deepen the reflection on the role of media sources in the processes of deep mediatization and the interpretive flexibility of technology. To analyze the media sources, a mixed-methods approach was deployed, comprising text-mining tools (co-occurrence analysis, sentiment analysis) and qualitative analyzes (sociology of knowledge approach to discourse, SKAD). The dataset included articles chosen on the basis of popularity (ie, shares on Twitter). The qualitative analysis was conducted on 100 articles from these sources.

The impact of technological progress on labor markets has received a great amount of scrutiny. Labor market polarization is claimed to be one of the more prominent consequences of the recent wave of technological advancement – the digital revolution. However, this claim is not uncontroversial. Questions arise on the scale of polarization and the universality of this effect across countries. This paper aims to provide insight into this phenomenon in the relatively under-researched EU-CEE countries. Our study, which focuses on the manufacturing sector in EU-CEE countries, shows that increasing robot density is related to shrinking employment in routine, middle-skilled occupations. While we report a positive effect of robot density on employment in lower routine, high-skill occupations, the impact on low-skill occupations is insignificant. Hence, we fail to provide strong evidence in favor of the direct impact of robot density on labor market polarization.

Internet piracy has been repeatedly shown to displace the authorized consumption of digital content. However, fewer studies tried to identify a viable solution and none – to the authors' best knowledge – tried to convert the 'pirates' into paying consumers. We conducted a three-wave panel survey among comic book readers, asking about their consumption from various sources. After each wave, a random subsample was provided with prizes in the form of digital comic books from a legal provider. We analyze the effects of prizes on further consumption behavior. The first prizing scheme incentivized setting up an account, installing a reader app and familiarizing oneself with the catalog of the dominant digital seller of comics. The second scheme aimed at hooking consumers on particular comic book series. However, we find no consistent evidence of a change in the consumption patterns or the willingness to pay for digital formats. We suggest that for the case of comic books the prices of lower-valued digital copies might determine purchase and discuss the use of similar research design for other creative content.

Digital entertainment moves away from one-time events and games towards sustainable experiences that can be shared with others. These types of virtual ecosystems also support their own economies with exchange of virtual currency, digital items and user-generated content. One such platform is Roblox, which as of April 2021 had more than 200 million unique users monthly. Roblox is a platform for virtual experiences built by the participating community. It also facilitates events ranging from in-platform concerts of established artists to fashion shows with branded items. We provide the first quantitative study of this ecosystem, analyzing the determinants of virtual experiences' popularity using data on thousands of in-platform titles, and tracking some of them over time. We build upon the literature on success of and engagement in video games and the much debated metaverse concept. Our results show that frequent experience updates and incentives in the form of badges or in-game items are crucial for a virtual experience to grow and sustain an active player base. favorably, the maximum number of players in an experience instance and the and the often-discussed interoperability of experiences are less important than expected.

The far-reaching reform of the EU personal data protection system has had an impact on many areas of social life, including the private dispute resolution (arbitration). The solutions introduced by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the obligations imposed by it may prove impractical in the context of arbitration and difficult to reconcile with its unique features, such as confidentiality, flexibility or efficiency. The work outlines and attempts to solve the most important legal problems occurring at the interface of arbitration and personal data protection law. In the initial part, the issue of applying the GDPR to arbitration proceedings and the admissibility of processing personal data in the course of these proceedings is discussed. Then, the problem of assigning the participants of arbitration appropriate roles under the Regulation – such as data controller, data processor or data subject – is taken up, while discussing the rights and obligations related to them. The last chapter of the work, devoted to the principles of personal data processing, indicates the obligations arising from them in the context of arbitration proceedings and practical problems that may arise during their implementation.

Short-term accommodation rentals provided via Airbnb had a major impact on urban tourism across Europe. Cities reacted to the challenges related to Airbnb in various ways, pursuing a wide range of regulatory strategies between laisses-faire and almost full ban policies. The aim of this paper is to examine the attributes related to the professionalization of Airbnb in 12 major EU cities, and evaluate the role of local regulations. The results suggest that cities with a liberal approach are characterized by relatively larger and more professionalized Airbnb supply compared to locations with a tighter regulatory strategy.

The purpose of this working version of the article is to introduce the issue of automation of intellectual work. The article is a report of qualitative exploratory research based on semi-structured interviews conducted with 13 people employed in middle management positions in international corporations providing business services. The first part of the text describes the context of the study and explains key concepts, such as the digital economy, knowledge workers and automation. The second part presents the state of research on the subject from the perspective of the sociology of work. The third part introduces the research methods and tools, as well as the characteristics of the respondents. The fourth, main part of the text, presents the initially interpreted empirical material divided into four main thematic areas: 1) understanding work automation, 2) the impact of automation on employment, 3) conflicts resulting from the implementation of new technological solutions, 4) the impact of new technologies and management strategies on professional practices. The fifth and final part contains a summary and proposals for the conceptualization of the research.

This article examines preferences for new privacy protection mechanisms on the Internet introduced by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The authors estimate the monetary value of the basic instruments provided by the reform and assess the potential welfare benefits. For methodological reasons, they use a discrete choice experiment with stated preferences. This approach provides ex ante insight into users’ preferences for individual privacy control mechanisms, such as the right to be forgotten, the right to object to profiling, and the portability of personal data. Their study is based on an online survey conducted among 143 students of Polish universities before the introduction of the GDPR. These data were used to estimate a mixed logit model. The main conclusion of the analysis is that the introduction of the GDPR increases consumer surplus by improving control over the sharing of personal data. The estimated value of the median consumer surplus per capita is EUR 6,5 per month. Users primarily appreciate the right to be forgotten, extended information obligations, and the objection to profiling. The role of data portability is surprisingly underestimated. Preferences for the right to be forgotten are higher among the more privacy-conscious and lower among respondents who actively use more online services. Intensive online activity increases the need for informative and user-friendly privacy policies.

This study is a summary of a master's thesis defended at the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the University of Warsaw. The aim is to examine what factors condition the absorption of modern technologies. Particular attention was focused on determinants related to human capital, organizational capital and the broadly understood business environment. Using a series of regressions based on data on 14 sectors in 21 OECD countries from 2012-2018, it was shown that both human and organizational capital are important complementary factors to modern technologies. Moreover, market regulations, especially those related to the labor market and stimulating the innovation of economies, play an important role in the adoption of digital technologies and strengthen the positive impact of human and organizational capital in the diffusion of modern technological solutions.

Business has no gender – this is a very common belief, confirmed by the results of the study by the Polish Agency for Enterprise Development entitled “Women’s entrepreneurship in Poland”. One of the conclusions of this study was that there is no separate, different “women’s entrepreneurship”, far different from “men’s entrepreneurship”. According to it, in reality, most young entrepreneurs operate in a similar way, have similar expectations, hopes and fears. Despite this, we can still notice a difference in the number of existing businesses run by women and men*. While only 14% of Polish women run businesses, of which only 3% employ employees, for men these rates are 22% and 5%, respectively.
