The influence of culture on the development of cities is obvious. It stimulates creativity and innovation, makes cities more friendly and attractive to residents and businesses. Culture is a factor that influences the space of cities in the functional and aesthetic dimension.
What role does culture play in the development of Wrocław? The DELab UW research team is looking for an answer to this question, conducting the study "Diagnosis of the cultural potential of Wrocław". The results of the study will be used for the purposes of foresight carried out as part of the European Capital of Culture. One of the main results of the study will be scenarios for the development of culture in Wrocław and in this context its potential impact on the development of the city. Identification of cultural practices that deserve popularization and areas requiring intervention will also be carried out. In parallel with the DELab UW team, research in Wrocław is conducted by teams from the University of Wrocław and the Jagiellonian University. However, only the DELab team is working on the problem of linking culture with the development of the city in the context of current civilization trends and culture-forming processes. On May 23, 2016, a meeting of three research teams took place, during which the assumptions of the research projects being carried out, their goals and preliminary results were presented and discussed. The management of the European Capital of Culture participated in the meeting. A week later, on May 30, 2016, a workshop meeting was held, the participants of which – representatives of creative circles in Wrocław – verified the results of the DELab team’s research during the discussion. The research is scheduled to be completed by mid-July 2016. The DELab UW team is led by Dr. Mirosław Grochowski from the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies, and consists of: Dr. Katarzyna Wojnar, Dr. Anna Świętochowska, Piotr Dworzański, Krzysztof Gubański, Bartłomiej Iwańczak and Karolina Wereta.
