Austrian Academy of Sciences

Dr Marcella Tambuscio is a postdoctoral researcher at Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. Her main research goal is to explore applications for machine learning techniques in the humanities.

She has a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in Computer Science from University of Pisa. In 2017 she completed her PhD in Computer Science at University of Turin, focusing her research on spreading phenomena in social networks, specially misinformation and fake news diffusion. In her thesis specifically she studied the effectiveness of fact-checking and explored the role of network segregation and gullible communities in the dissemination process of hoaxes. She also explored the influence of social media in the formation of public opinion in online (Twitter) political conversations. Moreover, she collaborated with one of the main Italian banks to analyse their data with network analysis tools.

Her research interests are Network Science, Machine Learning, Data Mining and Visualisation.

We devoted the seminar to the results of a study by Dr Marcelia Tambuscio of the Austrian Academy of Sciences on the spread of information – especially disinformation – online and how this polarisation process occurs.

Network science and machine learning are powerful tools for studying phenomena related to human interaction. During the meeting, our speaker presented some of the research results concerning the spread of disinformation and opinion dynamics in social networks. She mainly focused on the idea that underlying social connections and the presence of communities with different behaviours play a very important role in the evolution of online conversation.

A series of Polish-language meetings during which researchers and guest speakers look at issues related to digital transformation, new technologies, innovation and digital research methods.

The aim of the "Digitisation under the closer look of science" seminars is to build cooperation between academia, the public sector and business. Scientists share their research findings and have the opportunity to discuss them with experts. The results of their work are available on the DELab UW website.
